9/10/2023 4:23:00 PM | Men's Water Polo

The Beach finish the Empire Classic 4-0 and make program history.

LA VERNE, Calif.—The Long Beach State men's water polo team finished play at the Inland Empire Classic in dominant fashion. In total, the Beach scored over 50 goals in two games played outscoring their opponents 53-11 on the day.

Things got started early for the Long Beach State first game on Sunday, with Riley Catino opening the scoring in just over 30 seconds of play. This set the tone for the game, as Abdelrahman Soliman followed with three straight goals as the Beach would go on to finish the first half leading 14-2. Catino, Soliman, and Botond Hajdu would each finish the game with four goals and 11 different players found the back of the cage. Long Beach State would go on to win the game 25-9.

On the defensive end, Gabe Haddad and Jackson Sanders split time in goal combining for seven saves. The Beach also managed to grab 11 steals in the game with Soliman and Reed Panthaleon each having three.

Long Beach State's dominance in the afternoon game against La Verne turned out to be a historic performance. The 28-2 victory featured a program record in goals in a single game, as well as the largest margin of victory (26 goals). Long Beach State once again had a balanced attack with 11 different players scoring in the game. Marc Frigola and Guillermo Ocasio led the way with four goals each, while Riley Catino, Caleb Francisco, Reed Panthaleon, and Abdelrahman Soliman each had three goals.

Long Beach State's stout defensive effort continued in the second game, as they recorded 20 steals, with Caleb Francisco grabbing eight on his own.

The two wins improves Long Beach State's record to 7-1 this season. The Beach will look to extend its five-game win streak against Big West foe UC San Diego on Thursday, September 14.
