Women’s Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to No. 15 Texas in Season Opener

8/17/2023 10:22:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Cherrie Cox scored twice to lead the Beach but they fell short, 4-3.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State women's soccer played No. 15 Texas in an incredible back-and-forth contest on Thursday night, but the Beach came up short suffering a heartbreaking season opening defeat, 4-3. The Longhorns scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the final six minutes of the game.

The night started in historical fashion as Cherrie Cox found the back of the net just 41 seconds after the opening whistle. After an Elysia Laramie shot was saved, the rebound went to Summer Laskey who dished it off to Cox for the finish. The score goes as the fastest goal to start a match in program history, which was previously set back in 2013 (43 seconds).

From there, the first half was a defensive showcase as neither team could beat their opposing keeper. Texas recorded six shots with three on target and saved by Morgan Houston-Shepherd, while the Beach tallied four shots, two of which were on target.

Coming out of halftime, it was all about the offenses. Within the first 12 minutes of the second half, four goals were scored with two for each side.

Texas tied the game at two with a goal in the 52nd minute but was answered by Cox's second goal of the night just a minute later. In the 56th minute, the Longhorns evened the scored at three but once again, LBSU responded with Laramie's first goal of the year to reclaim the lead, 3-2.

That score would hold true until the 84th minute when Texas' Trinity Byars netted her second goal of the night on a cross-in that was misplayed the Beach defense.

With the game tied 3-3 and less than 30 seconds to play, the Longhorns sent a long ball toward the LBSU goal. The clear went straight into a header by Abby Allen that snuck past Houston-Shepherd in goal to give Texas the 4-3 victory.

Cox scored twice on the night, her first brace of the year, to lead the Beach on opening night. Laramie scored a goal and recorded an assist to begin her final collegiate season. Summer Laskey, Alia Sinoff, and Brooklyn Antonucci each registered an assist. For Antonucci, it is the first career point of her collegiate career with tonight marking her first career game and start in a Beach uniform.

Long Beach State will look to bounce back on Sunday as they host Boston College to close out the first week of the season. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. live on ESPN+.
