Long Beach State ended their season with a 7-1 victory over the Aggies on Saturday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State wrapped up their season with a 7-1 victory over UC Davis on Saturday night. The win gives the Dirtbags (33-22, 17-13 Big West) a sweep of the Aggies as they end the year as winners in seven of their last nine games and three straight series wins.
The day started with a ceremony honoring the 2023 senior class as eight Dirtbags were part of the final collegiate games of their career.
A quartet of seniors combined to throw all nine innings with Dalton Ponce getting the start. The right-hander tossed three shutout innings with six strikeouts while scattering four hits on the night. He handed the ball off to Jake Rons who followed up with three innings of one-run ball and a pair of strikeouts.
Josh Haley took over in the seventh and worked a scoreless frame with a strikeout. Ethan Clough closed out the ballgame with two scoreless innings of his own with three strikeouts.
Offensively, the 'Bags totaled seven runs on 11 hits scoring all of their runs in the first five innings.
The big swing of the night came in the bottom of the fifth from Connor Burns. The first three batters of the inning reached safely loading the bases up for the junior catcher. Battling to a full count, he launched a shot to center field for a grand slam, projected 410 feet. It goes as his fourteenth home run of the season and ends his likely final season at LBSU with 50 RBI.
The Dirtbags finish their season with 33 wins, the most in the Valenzuela era and most since the 2017 season.
