Dirtbags Fall in Weekend Finale at Nevada

4/30/2023 5:48:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State end their trip to Reno with a split of their four games.

RENO, Nev. – Long Beach State fell behind early to host Nevada in their weekend finale on Sunday, and could not overcome the deficit in a 8-7 defeat. It gives the Dirtbags a split of their four-game set in Reno with a 41-33 run differential for the weekend.

Nevada got the scoring started early, plating three runs in the bottom half of the first and then two more in the bottom of the third.

As they did yesterday, Long Beach State was scoring consistently, but not in bunches. Plating single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth they chipped into the deficit to make it a one-run ballgame through six innings.

Josh Haley was terrific in his outing to keep the Dirtbags in the game. Entering the game in the third inning, the veteran southpaw threw three near-perfect innings, allowing just one hit while striking out one.

Kellan Montgomery took over on the mound in the sixth and worked a quick, 10 pitch frame to retire the side in order. Unfortunately, he would not have the same results in the seventh as the Wolfpack launched a two-out, two-run home run to extend their lead.

After Nevada plated an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, the Dirtbags started a rally in the ninth.

Nick Marinconz reached on a leadoff walk, moved up to third, and scored on a wild pitch to score the first run of the inning. With two runners aboard, Jonathon Long sent a shot into the right-center gap to plate two more runs and make it a one-run game.

With the tying run on third, Eddie Saldivar struck a line drive well but right at the first baseman to end the ballgame , 8-7.

Saldivar led the offense in the finale, going 3-for-5 with a walk and a run scored. Long had the only other multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.

Long Beach State will have a quick turnaround as they wrap up their eight-game road stretch on Tuesday against USC. The game will be played at Angel Stadium in Anaheim with a 6 p.m. first pitch. Tickets can be purchased at angels.com/dirtbags
