Long Beach State trailed 5-0 right out of the gates, but their rally back came up short.
RENO, Nev. – Long Beach State fell behind early to Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon and could not complete the comeback, falling 7-6 to the Lopes. The Dirtbags scored in six consecutive innings from the second through the seventh, but were shutdown in the eighth and ninth.
The Grand Canyon offense batted around in the top of the first inning and came out with an early 5-0 lead. They tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but never held a larger lead than five.
Myles Patton was tremendous out of the bullpen to keep the Dirtbags in the game. Entering in the second inning, the freshman southpaw tossed five innings and allowed just two runs. Relying on his defense behind him, he only registered one strikeout on the afternoon.
Long Beach State slowly, but surely forced their way back into the game plating single runs in every inning starting in the second and ending in the seventh. Unfortunately, trailing just one run, the GCU closer retired six of the seven batters he faced to close out the 7-6 score.
Jonathan Carlos was also terrific out of the pen throwing three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out three.
In the box score, Connor Burns led the way with a 3-for-5 day at the plate. The junior had two doubles, a run scored, and a run batted. He is now 8-for-15 on the weekend giving him a team-leading .320 batting average for the season.
Long Beach State will close out their weekend in Reno tomorrow afternoon with one more game against host Nevada. First pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
