Gementera, Hagenah Named AVCA/CBVB National Pair of the Week

The first-year pair went undefeated to lead the Beach to the Big West title.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The freshmen pair of Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah have been named the AVCA National Pair of the Week after an undefeated weekend at the Big West Championships. The AVCA office announced the news on Monday afternoon.
Playing in the first flight for the first time in their collegiate careers, the duo made quick work on day one of the conference championships with two straight set victories over Sacramento State and UC Davis. Both were dual securing points as the Beach moved on to the winner's bracket semi-final the next day.
Their win over Sacramento State marked their 30th of the season giving them the most single-season victories by an individual in program history just one week after they set the LBSU record for most pairs wins in a single-season.
Moving on to Saturday, Gementera and Hagenah secured the dual victory once again with a third set, extra point thriller over No. 8 Hawai'i to advance to the finals. After falling in the first set, the duo came back to force a third and a Hagenah ace won it 16-14 for the dual victory.
They wrapped up their weekend with another straight set victory in the finals with Cal Poly leading Long Beach State to their first ever Big West championship.
For the season, the first-year pair is an unbelievable 33-5 overall with a 13-dual win streak and winners in 26 of their last 27 duals.
