Long Beach State out hit Cal Poly 10 to 2 in the final game, but the Mustangs scored the only runs in the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State spent most of the day on the bases and gave up just two hits on the day to the Mustangs, but Cal Poly connected the two and held on for a 2-0 win to grab the third and final game from the Beach.
Long Beach State (23-20, 13-5 Big West) sparked the first of what felt like countless two-out opportunities in the second inning, as Carly Robbins and Makayla Ceballos hit back-to-back singles to put two on for the Beach. Selena Perez then hit a slicing ball into the gap, but Cal Poly (15-18, 8-10 Big West) center fielder Jessica Clements was able to run the ball down and end the threat with a great catch.
Cal Poly had both of their hits in the third. Jade Contapay started the inning with a walk against Samantha Fowler, and after a fielder's choice for the second out, Juju Sargent tripled to score the first run of the game. On another fly ball to the outfield, Sara Olson made an attempt at a diving catch to end the inning but it was just outside of the left fielder's grasp and landed for another triple, scoring Sargent to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Eryka Gonzales entered in relief for Long Beach State at that point and set down 12 straight in four perfect innings, giving the Beach a chance to catch up but LBSU could never capitalize. With two on in the fourth, Cal Poly was able to get out of the inning by throwing out Carly Robbins at the plate.
In the sixth, Robbins was a victim again of some more bad luck. With the bases loaded and no outs, Robbins lined a rocket that found the glove of Kai Barrett at first base for a double play, and once again the Mustangs escaped with no damage.
Down to their last chance, the Beach mounted one more two-out rally attempt with singles from Cam Cecil and Jacquelyn Bickar, but starter Sophia Ramuno returned to the circle and closed out the win with a final out, despite Long Beach State out hitting Cal Poly 10 to 2 on the final day and 20 to 6 for the series, which the Beach took two games to one.
Long Beach State will hit the road for two weeks, starting with a three-game series beginning at Hawai'i on Friday, April 28 before closing out the regular season at home against Cal State Fullerton on May 12.
