A three-run home run from Mikayla Ceballos had the Beach in front, but UH recovered for the win.
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Long Beach State battled back to take the lead, but the offense for Hawai'i carried the Rainbow Wahine to a 7-3 win over the Beach in the first of three games from Honolulu.
Solo home runs from Hawai'i (29-16, 12-7 Big West) struck first, taking the lead as Cira Bartolotti first and then Maya Nakamura gave UH a 2-0 lead.
Long Beach State (23-21, 13-6 Big West) battled back in the fourth inning. Jacquelyn Bickar and Makayla Medellin each hit a base hit to put two on in front of Mikayla Ceballos, who smashed a ball to dead center to take a 3-2 lead over the Rainbow Wahine.
The lead was short-lived for Long Beach State however. Another solo shot, this time from Mya'Leah Bethea tied the game, and after a pair of walks loaded the bases, an error loaded the bases with no outs. A hit batter gave Hawai'i a 4-3 lead, and after a station to station single from Makamura make the score 5-3, a two-run double from Haley Johnson extended the UH lead.
Eryka Gonzales did a good job in relief for the Beach, holding the Rainbow Wahine for the fifth and sixth inning after finishing off the fourth inning. A leadoff hit began the inning for the Beach from pinch hitter Emily Salazar, but Key-an Campbell-Pua was able to finish off the and complete the complete game and the 7-3 for UH.
`The series continues on Saturday, with a doubleheader scheduled from the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. First pitch will be at 5 p.m. PT with live coverage provided on ESPN+. #GoBeach
