Beach Tennis Cruises To 7-0 Sweep In Black And Blue Rivalry

Long Beach State improved to 5-3 in Big West play with the road victory.
IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating UC Irvine 7-0 on Thursday as the team played their penultimate match of the regular season.
Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt continued their roll in doubles action, taking the opening match of the day with a 6-1 win over Alyssia Fossorier and Jenna Schlatter. Hana Becirovic Novak and Mathilde Tranberg soon sealed the first point of the day for Long Beach State (9-9, 5-3 Big West) with a 6-3 win over Amanda Perez and Asha Gidwani of UC Irvine (10-7, 2-6 Big West)
Long Beach State's depth came into play for a number of quick singles victories. Justine Dondanay, playing at the sixes cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Larissa Teramura, and Doga Akyurek similarly made quick work of Hailey Huynh in flight five, winning 6-2, 6-1. Ramstedt then sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Fossorier.
Electing to play out the remaining singles matches, the Beach quickly grabbed a fifth point as Tranberg took down Perez in the fourth flight. Cook split two sets with Gidwani before the UCI freshman was forced to retire, and Sarah Medik closed out the sweep with a straight sets victory over Jenna Schlatter in the top flight, winning 6-4, 7-6.
Long Beach State will finish both Big West play and the regular season this weekend, traveling to face UC Davis at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. That match is a makeup of the match originally scheduled for March 28 in Davis that was rained out.
