LBSU’s Jenny Hilt-Costello Wins 400th Career Match with 4-3 Victory Over UC Davis

Mathilde Tranberg’s singles win on court four secured the win for Long Beach State
DAVIS, Calif. – Long Beach State Tennis turned in a gritty performance on Saturday morning at UC Davis as the Beach grinded out a 4-3 road victory on the way to Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello earning her 400th career win.
The Beach (10-9) closed out the regular season with a 6-3 Big West mark and are in a potential five-way tie in the conference standings with seeding still to be determined. The Big West Tournament will take place April 26-29 at the Barnes Tennis Center in in San Diego, Calif.
With the victory over UC Davis (8-13, 3-6 Big West), Hilt-Costello improves to 18-0 in her career over the Aggies. In program history, the Beach have only lost one contest to UC Davis back in 1993, as LBSU is 20-1 over the Aggies all-time.
"This was a strong conference road win for us in difficult circumstances," said Hilt-Costello. "We didn't play our best tennis, but we found a way to win."
Sheena Masuda and Justine Dondonay got the day started with a 6-1 win over Yana Gurevich and Ariana Stavropoulos in doubles action. However, the Aggies picked up the next two wins on courts three and two to claim the doubles point.
Rhona Cook got the Beach on the board as she battled out a singles win at flight three over Michell Zell. Cook claimed the first set 6-1, before dropping the next, 3-6, and closed it out with a 6-3 win.
Singles competition would go back-and-forth throughout the day as Peppi Ramstedt fell by scores of 7-5, 6-4, to Stavropoulous as Davis regained the lead, 2-1.
Dondonay bested Kristina Evloevan, 7-5, 7-5 in the sixth flight to even the score at 2-2.
Doga Akyurek rebounded nicely at the fifth flight as she defeated Olive Maunupau 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 to give Long Beach State its first lead of the day, 3-2.
However, UC Davis would even the match up at 3-3 after Sarah Medik fell to Gurevich, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, at flight one.
The match would all come down to flight four where Mathilde Tranberg was battling it out with Kaia Wolfe. After taking the first set 7-5, Tranberg dropped the second 2-6. With the match on the line, she gutted out a gritty 7-5 victory to give the Beach the win.
