A freshman, Jasmine Leovao becomes the fifth individual medalist from Long Beach State at the Big West’s championship tournament.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Freshman Jasmine Leovao was able to hold off the competition on Tuesday's final round of the Big West Championship to claim individual medalist honors at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.
Leovao was joined by Hannah Ko from Long Beach State on the podium, as the junior climbed one spot on the final day to finish in third place overall.
Jasmine Leovao set a program record in the first day of the tournament with a 6-under par 66, the lowest round ever for the Beach at the Big West Championship to stake her place at the top of the leaderboard, and finished the tournament with a 216 total over 54 holes. Her even-par score was the best of the tournament by three strokes, giving the Beach the championship.
Ko had the best score on the day for Long Beach State, a two-over par 74 to finish the tournament at 5-over par.
As a team, Long Beach State maintained their second-place standing from Monday as Cal Poly claimed the team championship. Angelina Kim and Janae Leovao both shot 80 on Tuesday, as did freshman substitute Madison Le.
Leovao joins a select list of Long Beach State champions at the Big West. Kay Hoey (2007), Jennifer Yu (2018), Haley Tygret (2019) and Holland Shourds (2021) are the other individual champions in program history, though the recent strength of LBSU shines through, with the Beach claiming four of the last five individual winners.
As the Big West's champion, Leovao will earn automatic entry into the NCAA Regional Round as an individual, the fourth player in Long Beach State women's golf history to gain entry to the postseason as an individual. The entire field will be announced on Wednesday, April 26.
