Long Hits His Second Walkoff Home Run of the Week to Secure Series Win

4/1/2023 9:44:00 PM | Baseball

The Dirtbags’ win streak extends to seven straight games with their third walkoff of the season.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Jonathon Long played hero for the second time this week, launching a walkoff home run to center field on Saturday night. The Dirtbags (17-8, 5-3 Big West) have now won seven straight games and secured the series win over Cal Poly (7-16, 3-5 Big West).

The final three innings saw the game tied twice and two separate lead changes capped off by the walkoff in the bottom of the ninth.

Going into the eighth, Long Beach State held a 3-1 advantage but the Mustangs rallied for two runs to tie it up at three. Connor Burns responded in the bottom half of the eighth with a solo home run to straight away left, his fifth of the season.

Now owning a 4-3 lead into the ninth, Cal Poly rallied once again plating a run to make it a tie game. After a groundout and a strikeout started the inning, the game was one out away from extras. After a first pitch strike, Long got a hanging offspeed pitch and launched it 100mph and a projected 393 feet to center for a walkoff homer.

It is the second time this week that Long has connected for a walkoff home run after hitting one on Tuesday against California Baptist in the Dirtbags' midweek matchup. It was also his second homer of the night with a solo shot in the seventh inning as well.

On the day, the junior first baseman went 3-for-5 at the plate with the two home runs, two runs scored, and three RBI.

Not to be forgotten was Nico Zeglin on the bump. The right-hander battled through seven innings allowing just one run on three hits and a walk while striking out nine Mustangs. He now owns a Big West leading 57 strikeouts on the season to go along with a 2.62 ERA.

The Nick Marinconz revenge series continued Saturday night as well with the Cal Poly transfer going 2-for-4 at the plate. He is now 6-for-8 in the first two games of the series against his former team.

Long Beach State on the season now has three walkoff home runs, two this week, as well as a game-winning home run on the road in extras.

The Dirtbags will now take their seven-game win streak into the series finale with the Mustangs tomorrow afternoon. First pitch will be at 1 p.m. on ESPN+
