Martina Cardona Named Big West Player of the Week

IRVINE, Calif.—Sophomore Martina Cardona was selected as Big West Player of the Week as announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon. Cardona earned the honors after a standout performance led to a win against UC San Diego for No. 7 Women's Water Polo in their first Big West game of the season.

Cardona led the offensive effort for the Beach as she scored three goals and recorded an assist. She also managed to win her two sprint opportunities, making her 14-3 on sprints this season.

The Barcelona, Spain native has been a key player for Long Beach State in her debut season. She is second on the team with 29 goals and leads the team in assists with 13. The sophomore has now scored in 14 of 15 games this season, including goals in 12 straight games. She has also picked up assists in seven straight games. Her efforts have also been huge on the defensive side of the game where she has collected nine steals so far this season.

Cardona now ranks in the top 10 in the Big West for goals (29), points (42), sprint wins (14), and points per game (2.9).
