Bickar’s Grand Slam Leads Long Beach State To Win Over Montana

3/4/2023 5:37:00 PM | Softball

The Beach earned a split on the day after Bickar’s grand slam gave the Beach a comeback win over the Griz.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Jacquelyn Bickar's grand slam in the day's second game earned Long Beach State a split in two games in the final day for the Beach at the San Diego Classic.

Long Beach State (7-12) outhit Boston (13-4) for a second time in the rematch between the teams, but the Terriers strung theirs together to grab the victory over the Beach in the first game of the day.

Jacquelyn Bickar opened the game with a single, but was stranded on second in the top of the first, and Boston did their damage in the bottom half of the inning. Kayla Roncin and Caitlin Coker hit back-to-back singles with one out to put two on. A wild pitch advanced both into scoring position for Brooke Depiesse who drove in both runs of the game with a single.

Samantha Fowler and Sophia Fernandez combined to allow just one additional hit from Boston over the next five innings, but Allison Boaz held Long Beach State off the board in a complete game shutout to grab the win over LBSU.

Two home runs shaped the majority of the day's second game against Montana (0-18) after the Beach got off to a quick start. Bickar opened the bottom of the first by drawing a leadoff walk, and came home to score on a single from Makayla Medeillin. Medellin was then brought home on a single from Rebekah Durazo to stake Long Beach State to an early 2-0 lead.

Montana was able to push across a run in the third inning with a sacrifice fly, and then with a runner on base in the fifth, a two-run home run Kelly Sweyer gave the Grizzlies the lead, moving ahead 3-2.

Durazo walked to open the bottom of the sixth inning, and after an error on a sacrifice put Sara Olson on, Lilyanna Martinez reached on a ground ball to load the bases with one out. Bickar then pulled the offering from Allie Brock down the left field line, breaking open the game with the team's first grand slam of the season to put the Beach ahead 6-3.

Shannon Haddad, who had come on in the top of the sixth in relief, worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the victory for her fourth win of the season.

Long Beach State returns home tomorrow, hosting No. 20 in a marquee game at the LBSU Softball Complex beginning at Noon. Live coverage of the game will be available, with the broadcast coming on ESPN+, the first of the year for Long Beach State.
