Long Beach State goes on the road and falls by one run.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State took an early lead on the road at California Baptist in the first of seven games this week, but a late rally came up just short at CBU held on to win 3-2.
Long Beach State (7-13) took the lead in the top of the first inning. Jacquelyn Bickar singled to start off the game, and after Corissa Sweet was hit by a pitch, a walk to Carly Robbins loaded the bases in front of Lilyanna Martinez, who beat out a bobbled through from California Baptist (12-9) shortstop Priscilla Estrada for a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers answered back in the bottom half, taking advantage of a LBSU miscue to take their first lead of the game. A walk and an error put two on in the first, and two more walks followed by a hit batter and a passed ball brought home a pair for California Baptist.
Estrada started a rally with a two-out single in the fourth inning, and scored on an error from Robbins to extend the California Baptist lead with what would be a key run.
Sara Olson hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead in half, 3-2. Jordan Castaneda, who had come on in the second inning closed out the contest, finishing with 6.0 innings pitched, striking out three in the win.
Long Beach State will now return to the LBSU Softball Complex to continue their busiest week of the year. The venue with the new lights will host 14 games over the course of the Louisville Slugger Invitational, hosting six games of their own. The tournament for Long Beach State begins on Thursday, March 9 at 3 p.m. when the Beach hosts No. 20 Baylor.
