Gamez Wins Men’s Hammer to Highlight Day One of Beach Opener

Track and Field had seven student-athletes compete on the first day of outdoor season.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State track and field team got their outdoor season started on Friday afternoon with day one of the Beach Opener. The two-day meet had just four throws events that saw seven Beach student-athletes compete.

Day 1 Results
 
Pablo Gamez was the headliner winning the men's Hammer competition. The senior posted a mark of 62.32m (204-5) on his third attempt of the afternoon to claim the top podium spot. The mark is a new lifetime-best for Gamez as well, surpassing his previous best by six and a half feet.
 
Also in men's Hammer was senior captain Sebastian Coleman. On his fifth attempt, he had a throw of 61.39m (201-5) to put him into third place.
 
On the women's side, Keeley Rasmussen shined in the Hammer claiming one of the podium spots. The sophomore posted a mark of 52.29m (171-6) on her fifth attempt of the afternoon bumping her into third place for the event.
 
Malia Talavou was not far behind her with the best performance of her career by a long shot. On her third attempt, she posted a throw of 50.84m (166-9) which is nearly 24 feet further than her previous lifetime-best. She finished fourth in the event.
 
Elliot Payne had a nice Long Beach State debut today in men's Javelin as well. Finishing fourth for the event, the transfer recorded a mark of 61.08m (200-4) on his fourth attempt.
 
Day one of the Beach Opener also saw history made as Linda Cohn set a new Masters Women's Javelin World Record at the Jack Rose Track. Her throw of 31.88m (104-7) is the furthest by anyone in her age category of 70-74.
 
Chris Barrett of Army West Point broke his own meet record in men's Javelin with a throw of 68.97m. Brooke Stratman, also of Army West Point, set a new meet record in women's Javelin with a throw of 49.51m.
 
Day two of the Beach Opener will begin tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. and runs through the entire day. Live results will be available via finishedresults.com
