Hawai’i Bests Long Beach State In Tight Conference Matchup

Long Beach State took the doubles point but fell in three sets in the deciding singles match.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Women's Tennis was outlasted by Big West foe, Hawai'i, falling short by a 4-3 score Thursday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
In a back-and-forth battle in flights one and two, Long Beach State (4-7, 2-2 Big West) garnered the doubles point to start the day. Sarah Medik and Mathilde Tranberg fell to Satsuki Takamura and Madison Kim 6-1 on court three. In the top doubles flight Sheena Masuda and Justine Dondonay collected a victory over Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova, 6-4. Giving the Beach their first point of the day, Peppi Ramstedt and Rhona Cook earned their victory against Anna Kern and Rita Pinto 6-4 on court two.
With the win, the duo of Ramstedt and Cook improved to 9-4 in doubles over the dual season.
To begin singles action, Sheena Masuda got the best of Anna Kern on court six by a score of 6-2, 6-4 while giving the Beach's second point of the day.
After falling behind 2-0, Hawai'i (5-6, 3-1 Big West) rebounded to get right back into the match. In the top singles flight, Ana Vilcek gave the Rainbow Wahine their first point of the day by defeating Medik, 6-2, 6-2. On court five, Rita Pinto captured a 7-5, 6-1 win over Dondonay, and Hawai'i picked up their third point, Satsuki Takamua defeated Mathilde Tranberg in a, 6-3, 6-5 outing.
Both flights on court two and four extended to highly fought competitive matches.
Nikola Homolkova earned a hard-fought victory over Ramstedt, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the victory for Hawai'i, finishing just before Rhona Cook collected a gritty three-set win against Madison Kim, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. That win gave the Beach a final third point and ending the match, 4-3 in favor of Hawai'i.
Long Beach State will return on Saturday March 18 as they will host Santa Clara at 11 a.m. at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
