Pair of School Records Broken on Final Day in New Mexico

2/4/2023 4:37:00 PM | Indoor Track

Rahni Turner, Ryley Fick, and Anitha Graves all broke LBSU bests on Saturday.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Beach track and field team saw two school records broken on the final day of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic wrapping up another weekend of the indoor season. Rahni Turner smashed the women's 60m Hurdles record while the duo of Ryley Fick and Anitha Graves both topped the women's 800m record.

Final Results

Turner got the historic day started with an 8.44 altitude-adjusted time in the 60m Hurdles qualifying round, which marked a new personal best and ranked second all-time in Long Beach State history. However, that mark did not last long as she bested herself in the prelims later on with a time of 8.34aa to shatter the school record set back in 2016.

A couple hours later into the day, Fick and Graves made their own history as both women broken the indoor 800m record that had stood for a decade. Fick takes over as the new record holder, her second LBSU record this season, with an altitude-adjusted time of 2:09.02 to claim first place. Graves finished just a half-second behind her at 2:09.52aa to top the previous school best and put herself at number two on the all-time list.

Those three marks highlighted another meet day that saw nine more top ten marks posted by the Beach.

Malia Talavou continued her record-setting season with another PR in Shot Put. Her throw of 14.92m (48-11.50) is an almost nine-inch improvement and is just half an inch shy of the program record.

On the men's side, the distance runners had an incredible day with three top five marks of their own. Kash Powell led the way, running the second fastest 800m in Long Beach State history. Finishing second in the event, his time of 1:50.79aa is just a little less than one second shy of the top spot. Making their indoor debuts, Cristian Martinez and Cameron Gill etched their names into the record book with the third and fourth fastest miles for the program. Martinez finished fifth overall with a time of 4:07.33aa while Gill was not far behind in seventh at 4:10.74aa.

The final top ten mark of the day came in men's Triple Jump with Elijah Harris launching himself 14.78m (48-06.00). The mark is a new lifetime best and puts him at tenth on the all-time list.

Closing out the day was the 4x400m Relay races with Alex Heerink-van Breda, Jaelyn Predium, Kaitlyn Williams, and Rahni Turner representing the Beach. The quartet combined for a 3:50.68aa time finishing just outside the top ten for the event. The time marks the sixth fastest four-by-four relay time in program history though and fastest since 2018.

Long Beach State will take next weekend off as they prepare for the MPSF Championships February 17-18. The conference championship meet will once again take place in Spokane, Wash.
