2022 SEASON IN REVIEW
• The 2022 season was full ups and downs for the Dirtbags ranging from a series victory with the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. For the year, they finished 29-27 overall with a 17-13 clip for a fourth place finish in Big West play.
• As has been the story under Coach Valenzuela, the pitching staff was the bright spot of the year. Statistically, they ranked fifth in the nation for most shutouts, seventh lowest in WHIP, ninth lowest in ERA, 17th fewest in hits per nine, and 20th overall in strikeout-to-walk ratio.
• Further, the defense held strong posting a .975 fielding percentage for the season which ranked 37th in the nation.
• The end of the year awards saw five different 'Bags receive honors headlined by Connor Burns being named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year. Fellow returners, Jonathon Long and Rocco Peppi were also recognized, earning All-Big West Honorable Mentions.
OPENING WEEKEND
• The Dirtbags won their season opening series against Wichita State taking two of the three games. They won game one 2-0, walked off the Shockers 6-5 in game two, and fell in the finale 11-6.
• Graham Osman was the star of the opener twirling seven shutout innings on the mound with eight strikeouts. Offensively, the 'Bags had eight hits with RBIs from Rocco Peppi and Jonathon Long.
• The story of game two was Rocco Peppi launching a two-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth. Nico Zeglin enjoyed a great debut on the mound with five innings of one-run ball while striking out eight.
• Wichita would prevent the sweep with a win on Sunday after scoring eight runs in the top of the third to put the game out of reach of the Dirtbags.
MIDWEEK MADNESS
• The Dirtbags played their first midweek game of the year this past Tuesday which also served as their first road contest of the season. Unfortunately, they fell 7-5 on a walkoff two-run home run from Loyola Marymount.
• Jake Rons got the start and turned in four solid innings, surrendering just one run and striking out five. Unforutnately, the bullpen would allow six runs to score on their way to the loss.
• Offensively, Jonathon Long led the way with two hits, including his first home run of the young season and two RBI. Nick Marinconz also had a two-hit night, his third consecutive multi-hit effort.
2023 SEASON SYNOPSIS
• The upcoming season is an intriguing one for the Dirtbags headlined by 34 new faces occupying the roster compared to just 8 returners who saw time on the field a year ago.
• Schedule wise, Long Beach State will have 28 official home games compared to 20 true road contests and 5 neutral contests. The headliners of the schedule include East Carolina, Grand Canyon, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, UCLA, and South Florida.
• In terms of the strength of the schedule, the 'Bags will face four teams currently ranked on all the different publications' rankings. Four of their 2023 opponents played in an NCAA Regional with ECU hosting a Super Regional. And 7 of their opponents posted 30-win seasons last year.
AGAINST SEATTLE
• Long Beach State and Seattle have faced each other just three times before with a weekend series back in 2013. The Redhawks won two of those three games at Blair.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
• Seattle is coming off a tough weekend, being swept at No. 5 Texas A&M. They were outscored 28-7 by the Aggies in their season opening series.
• The offense owns a slash line of .230/.325/.290 with one home run and seven RBI. Hudson Shupe and Trevor Antonson lead the way with five hits each and averages of .500 and .417, respectively.
• The pitching staff owns a 9.00 ERA with a 15-25 strikeout-to-walk ratio after their first three games. Peter Chronowski was their best arm out of the gate with 4.2 innings, allowing three unearned runs.
