Long Beach State Flexes Depth in Dominant Win Over Toronto

2/21/2023 9:17:00 PM | Women's Water Polo

Long Beach is off to their best start to a season since 2013.

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Freshman Ellie Goren led the way for the Beach with three goals in Long Beach State's 12-2 win over the University of Toronto. The Beach took the lead in the first minute of play and never looked back, as seven different players found the back of the cage. The win improves Long Beach State's record to 8-2, their best start to a season since 2013.

A few familiar faces put Long Beach State on top as Rachael Kowalchick and Elisa Portillo both scored to give the Beach an early lead. Toronto would pull one back, but the Beach responded with goals from Gabriella Matafora-Adams and Kowalchick to give them a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

The two goals at the end of the first quarter were the start of a 10-0 run for Long Beach State. Martina Cardona scored in the second quarter to extend her scoring streak to seven games. Matafora-Adams, Katie Dill, and Ellie Goren also added goals, increasing the lead to 8-1.

Dill added another goal in the third quarter, and sophomore attacker Becca Hale also found the back of the cage. Ellie Goren added two more goals in the fourth to complete her hattrick.

Inbar Geva and Ema Nathan split goalkeeping duties for the Beach, finishing with three saves and nine saves, respectively. The Beach defense also finished with a total of eight steals to help stifle Toronto.

Long Beach State will be back on the road this weekend, as they travel to Irvine for the Barbara Kalbus Invite. Their first game will be against #9 Michigan on Friday at 4:15 p.m.
