Dirtbags Shutout Wichita State in Season Opener

2/17/2023 10:05:00 PM | Baseball

Graham Osman tossed seven shutout innings in his Long Beach debut.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State opened their 2023 campaign with a dominant, shutout victory over Wichita State. Graham Osman was the star with seven shutout innings on the mound.

The Dirtbags (1-0) needed just two runs on the night as the pitching staff held Wichita State (0-1) to just two hits in their season opening win.

Earning the Friday night nod, Osman turned in a gem in his Dirtbags debut. Tossing seven shutout innings, he struckout eight while allowing just three baserunners. The lefty was extremely efficient as well needing just 75 pitches to work through 23 batters on the night.

The offense got started early with a run in the bottom half of the first. With two outs, Rocco Peppi sent a shot down the third base line for a double. He would come around to score thanks to a Jonathon Long RBI single through the left side of the infield.

That 1-0 lead would hold steady until the bottom of the fifth. Jashia Morrissey-Jakel and Alex Champagne would lead off the inning with back-to-back singles into center field. The next batter, Nick Marinconz, would get hit by a 3-2 pitch to load the bases with nobody out forcing Wichita to go to the bullpen.

The first pitch from the new Shocker arm was to Rocco Peppi and sent into left field for a sacrifice fly and give the 'Bags a 2-0 lead.

Osman would close out his final 11 batters before handing the ball off to Ethan Clough in the eighth. The right-hander would surrender a one-out double and after a groundout moved him to third, Coach Valenzuela went back to the bullpen to bring in Josh Haley.

The fifth year senior was lockdown retiring all four batters he faced to pick up the save and secure the Dirtbags first win of the year.

Offensively, Long and Alex Champagne each posted two-hit nights with Champagne reaching base three times out of the leadoff spot and Long recorded an RBI. Peppi was 1-for-3 playing a part in both runs scored.

Eddie Saldivar, Connor Burns, and Morrissey-Jakel all recorded their first knocks of the season in the victory as well.

Long Beach State is back on the field tomorrow night for another 6 p.m. matchup with Wichita State as they look to take their first series of the season.
