LONG BEACH, Calif.— Four players scored three or more goals, including four-goal performances from Rachael Kowalchick and Elisa Portillo as Long Beach State took care of business against Loyola Marymount winning by a score of 17-13.
The Beach found themselves down after the first quarter of action after an early five-meter penalty goal put Loyola Marymount on the board. Goals by Portillo and Jamie Oberman kept it close, but the Lions led 3-2 heading into the break.
Loyola Marymount's lead did not last long, as the Beach came out firing early in the second quarter. Lara Luka scored her first of three goals on the day in under a minute to tie the game at 3-3, followed by goals from Oberman and Gabriella Matafora-Adams. Long Beach State would go on to outscore LMU 5-2 in the quarter and went into halftime leading by a score of 7-5.
The intermission did not stop the momentum for Long Beach State, as Portillo and Luka both scored within the first minute of play. The Beach once again outscored the Lions by three goals in the quarter, giving them a 12-7 lead after three quarters.
The lead was enough to push the Beach to victory, as the two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, resulting in the 17-13 win.
Chelsea Oliver finished the game with 10 saves to lead the defensive effort for the Beach on the day. On the offensive side, along with four goals from Kowalchick and Portillo, Martina Cardona and Luka each added three, and Jamie Oberman added two. Cardona and Portillo each had three assists as well.
Long Beach State's season continues Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m. as they welcome the University of Toronto to Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
