Women's Beach Tennis Sweeps the Highlanders

Coach Hilt-Costello earns her 200th Big West victory.
Long Beach, Calif. - Women's Long Beach State Tennis begins Big West play with a 4-0 sweep against the UC Riverside Highlanders. The Beach opened the dual match season with their first conference victory of the season, and Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello recorded her 200th Big West victory.
To kick off conference play, Sheena Masuda, Justine Dondonay, Rhona Cook, and Peppi Ramstedt earned LBSU's first point of the day. The duo of Masuda and Dondonay defeated Maya Youssef and Brionna Nguyen with a dominant score, 6-1. The second duo of Cook and Ramstedt solidified the Beach's first point by defeating Niki Shahbazi and Sofia Lazzaroni in a keen 6-3 match.
After a stellar start in doubles action, Long Beach State continued their dominance over the Highlanders in singles play.
In all three scoring matches, neither match extended to three sets. Sophomore Sheena Masuda continued her hot start and defeated Sydney Tran, with a score of 6-3, 6-2. She garnered the Beach's second point giving LBSU an advantageous lead. Sophomore Peppi Ramstedt was in command of her entire match. She defeated Niki Shahbazi, with a score of 6-1, 6-2. With Ramstedt's victory, she positioned LBSU in the driver's seat to capture their final point. To finish off the Highlanders, Sarah Medik displayed a hard nosed performance. With everyone presenting determination on the court, Medik captured the Beach's final point to complete the 4-0 sweep while defeating Maya Youssef.
Today's victory provided the Beach with some positive momentum as they get ready to face off against UC San Diego in their next match on February 11 at Noon in La Jolla, Calif.
