Beach Tennis Defeats UC San Diego on the Road

Long Beach State dominated UCSD by a score of 6-1
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Long Beach State (2-0) Women's Tennis garnered its second Big West victory on the road against UC San Diego (0-1) by a dominant score of 6-1.
"It was a solid road win against a very competitive conference team," said LBSU Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello.
Like their start against UC Riverside last Wednesday, Sheena Masuda, Justine Dondonay, Rhona Cook, and Peppi Ramstedt began the day earning the Beach's first point in doubles action. Masuda and Dondonay displayed an impressive victory against Ella Pachl and Grace Gamal in a shutout score, 6-0. The second duo of Cook and Ramstedt secured the Beach's first point by defeating Kelly Leung and Naomi Nguyen in a 6-2 match.
All four athletes in Masuda, Dondonay, Cook, and Ramstedt improved their doubles record at 2-0 while Ramstedt leads the team with a 12-3 overall doubles record.
After a strong start in doubles action, Long Beach State continued their dominance over the Tritons in singles play.
Freshman Doga Akyurek captured her first conference victory of the season. She gave the Beach its second point as she defeated Grace Gamal, 6-2, 6-1.
The Tritons closed the gap picking up their first point of the match as Naomi Nguyen beat out Sheena Masauda 6-2, 6-4 to make it 2-1 in favor of the Beach.
On court two, Mathilde Tranberg got the best of Ella Pachl as she picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win pushing the Beach's lead back up to two (3-1).
Ramstedt, who was playing at court two, picked up a quick 6-0 win over Sophie Pearson before pulling out the tight 7-6 battle to secure the Long Beach State victory. 4-1.
Adding to Long Beach State's point total, Dondonay and Sarah Medik won their matches at courts six and one, respectively. Dondonay fell short in her first set (4-6), but came back to win the last two sets 6-3, 6-3. Sarah Medik captured LBSU's final point against a challenging opponent one court one as she came out on top 6-2, 4-6, 11-9.
The Beach will be back in action on Wednesday, February 15 at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles when they take on Loyola Marymount.
