Women’s Golf Claims Tri-Match Championship To Start Spring Competition

Long Beach State dominated the single-round on Wednesday, winning the team championship by 19 strokes and recording the four lowest individual scores on the day.
OJAI, Calif. – Long Beach State shot 5-under par as a team on Wednesday at Soule Park Golf Course, pulling away from their two conference opponents on the day as the Beach won the Tri-Match to start the spring season against CSU Bakersfield and the hosts, CSUN.
Long Beach State had the two best scores on the day, as both junior Angelina Kim and sophomore Kristina Ponomareva finished with rounds of 3-under par to score 69. Kim was named the individual medalist via tiebreaker, and led a team effort that saw Long Beach State easily take the team championship as well.
The Beach had the four lowest rounds of the day and all eight golfers for the Beach (with three individuals competing) finished in the Top 10. Long Beach State closed the round with a team score of 283, winning the competition by 19 strokes in front of second place CSU Bakersfield.
Veteran Hannah Ko was second on the team score with a 2-under par 70, with junior Vanessa Richani one stroke back in fourth place overall with a one-under par 71. Freshman twins Jasmine and Janae Leovao rounded out the LBSU team score with identical rounds of 73 on the day.
Freshman Madison Le carded a two-over par 74 as an individual, while fellow freshman Isabella Ranches made her collegiate debut with a 3-over par 75 to put all of the Beach competitors on the day in the Top 10 among the 21-golfer field.
Long Beach State will have a brief break to prepare for spring tournament play proper. On February 27 and 28, LBSU will host their spring tournament, The Beach Invitational at Mission Viejo Country Club, the first of six scheduled tournaments in the spring culminating in the Big West Conference Championships in April.
