Track and Field Closes Out First Meet of 2023 Season

After 12 top ten marks were set yesterday, the Beach posted six more on Saturday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Long Beach State closed out their first meet of the season on Saturday, wrapping up competition at the Ralph Lindeman Invitational. After an incredible record book altering 12 top ten marks yesterday, the Beach posted six more today.
 
The jumpers continued to prove to be a strength for Long Beach with a sweep in men's Triple Jump. The quartet of Novye James, LaSalle Jackson, Benjamin Ahenguah, and Elijah Harris dominated the event finishing in the top four spots. James' 15.16m (49' 9") earned him the victory and the seventh best mark in program history while Jackson's jump of 14.75m (48' 4.75") was good for second and the tenth spot on the all-time list.
 
After moving into the record books and on to the finals in the 60m Hurdles yesterday, Hailey Fune improved by 0.12 seconds with a time of 8.53aa moving her up to third all-time. She finished fourth for the event, two spots ahead of teammate Rahni Turner, who ran an 8.69aa.
 
Kaitlyn Williams was the storyline yesterday with three top ten marks only to best two of those personal bests today. In the final of the 60m race, she improved by 0.1 seconds to 7.51aa to win the event and jump into third all-time. Similarly, the captain ran a 24.40aa in the 200m on the way to victory and put herself at fourth on the all-time list.
 
Sebastian Coleman posted the sixth and final record book changing mark of the day with a throw of 16.76m (55') in Shot Put. It marks a new PR for the senior and puts him at ninth all-time. He finished second in the standings.
 
Malia Talavou had another fantastic day of throwing, claiming the event victory in Shot Put. Her throw of 14.20m (46' 2.75") was over two feet further than the runner-up.
 
Some other notable finishes include Caleb Roberson finishing fourth in the 200m finals with a time of 21.95aa, Aiden Pastorian finishing fifth in his Long Beach State debut with a throw of 16.22m (53' 2.75") in Shot Put, and as mentioned earlier, Ahenguah and Harris rounding out a top four sweep in Triple Jump. Ahenguah jumped 14.49m (47' 6.5") for third while Harris went 14.44m (47' 4.5") to finish fourth.
 
In the final team standings, the Beach men's team finished third with 99 total points and the women's team finished fourth with 80.33 points.
 
Long Beach State is back in action next weekend as they head to the University of Washington for the UW Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
