Long Beach State held off a ninth inning rally for a 5-4 series opening victory.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (25-26, 13-12 Big West) took game one of the rivalry series against Cal State Fullerton (19-31, 11-14 Big West) on Friday night. The Dirtbags have now won four of the last five games against the Titans.
Jack Noble got the nod in the series opener and turned in a quality start, tossing six innings of two-run ball. Both runs against him came on a two-run homer in the sixth as his only blemish. The right-hander struck out five Titans on the way to his sixth victory of the season.
The Dirtbags got the scoring started with a three-run third inning. The rally started with a leadoff single and a walk before a Fullerton error allowed the first run to come in. Chase Luttrell provided the big swing of the inning with a two-run double down the right field line. The junior now owns 17 doubles on the season to go along with a team-high 44 RBI.
Noble cruised through five innings before allowing the two-run home run to Brendan Bobo in the sixth. However, the offense had his back responding with two runs of their own in the seventh.
Those runs came on one swing by true freshman Eddie Saldivar. The rookie second baseman smoked a fastball to deep right field for the first home run of his career. The two-run shot gave the Dirtbags a 5-2 lead heading into the final innings.
After cruising through the seventh and eighth, Matt Fields got hit a round a bit in the ninth as Cal State Fullerton rallied for a pair of runs to make it a one-run ballgame. With runners on first and second and only one out, the right-hander got the conference's leading hitter, Austin Schell, to roll into a game-ending double play and secure his fourth save of the season.
The 5-4 victory gives the Dirtbags their eighth win in the last nine games and puts them above .500 in conference play since starting league play with a series win over Hawai'i.
Seven different players notched hits in the win with Saldivar leading the way, going 1-for-3 with a homer, walk, two runs, and two RBI. Luttrell also recorded a pair of RBI while Isaac Ramirez reached safely twice, going 1-for-3 with a single and a walk.
Long Beach State will look to take the series over the rival Titans tomorrow afternoon. First pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
