Long Beach State Set for Big West Outdoor Championships

The Beach is heading up to Davis, Calif. for the conference championships this weekend.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State is set to compete in the Big West Outdoor Championships this weekend. The two-day meet will be hosted by UC Davis this year with competition happening all day both Friday and Saturday.
Entering the week, the Beach owns 12 of the conference's top marks while having the second-best in seven more events. Overall, they own 42 top five marks and 15 others in the top ten.
The most notable of the rankings goes to the men's group of throwers as Sebastian Coleman, Charlie Vernoy, Alec Jones, and Pablo Gamez own the top four marks in men's Hammer Throw while Jones, Coleman, and Vernoy also own the top three spots in men's Discus.
Among the other field events, the Beach also owns both top marks in Long Jump with Jason Smith ranking first on the men's side and Kaitlyn Williams being number one on the women's side. Smith also ranks second in men's High Jump heading into the weekend.
The duo of Crystal Washington and Imani Carmouche also own top jumps marks leading the conference in women's Triple Jump and High Jump respectively.
On the track, Ryley Fick leads the group with two top marks in the Big West, posting the fastest times in both the women's 800m and the women's 3000m Steeplechase. LeNaya Griffin also owns the fastest time for the conference in the women's 400m Run.
For the men, Mohammed Mohamed (800m), Michael Philips (1500m), and Joseph Anderson (110m Hurdles) lead the conference in their respective events.
Last year as a team, Long Beach State finished third on the men's side and sixth on the women's. Individually, Smith will look to defend his Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Meet honors from last season as well as men's Long Jump and High Jump titles. Jones is also looking to defend a pair of individual titles along with Washington and Katches for the women's team.
