Beach And Tritons Split Doubleheader At UC San Diego

Keila Bosinger hit a walkoff solo home run after the Beach shut out the Tritons in game one.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State came away with the series win but left with a sour taste as UC San Diego walked off the Beach 2-1 in the series finale after the Beach won the opening game Saturday 5-0.
Sophia Fernandez had an excellent start in the opening game, scattering four hits and striking out two on the way to a complete game shutout, her second of the season.
Long Beach State (19-17, 9-3 Big West) took the lead in the second inning. An error gave the Beach a baserunner, and a walk to Lilyanna Martinez moved Marissa Caballero to second base. In scoring position, a single from Naomi Hernandez then opened the scoring with LBSU leading 1-0.
The Beach then was able to break the game open in the fifth inning. Corissa Sweet and Kyra Snyder hit back-to-back-singles, and a 14-pitch walk to Cam Cecil loaded the bases in front of Rebakah Durazo. A wild pitch brought home one run, and then a double from Durazo plated two more as the Beach moved out in front of UC San Diego (19-18, 7-5 Big West), 4-0. An RBI single from Martinez added one more to make the score 5-0.
That was plenty for Fernandez, who retired the final nine batters she faced to close out her fifth win over the season.
Long Beach State took an early lead in game two as well. Bickar was hit by a pitch to open the third inning, and after getting pushed over to second base, she scored on a double from Ashleigh Inae, the first hit of the game for LBSU against Jada Cecil, the UCSD ace.
The Tritons evened the score in the fourth inning. After a one-out walk, a single put two runners on for UCSD, and Morgan Eng brought home the tying run with an RBI single.
Long Beach State threatened with runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't push a run across and the Tritons made the Beach pay. Shelby Frutoz picked up the first out of the inning, but Keila Bosinger hit a solo home run to right center to end it in the bottom of the seventh.
Long Beach State is back at home next weekend with another early series. The Beach will host UC Santa Barbara at the LBSU Softball Complex, with a single game on Friday, April 15 before a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16. Both games will start at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
