Samantha Fowler allowed one hit as the Beach won 8-0 in five innings.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State was in complete control in all areas on Friday against UC Santa Barbara, holding the Gauchos to one hit while piling up eight runs in five innings to finish off the run-rule victory to open the series.
Samantha Fowler allowed one hit on the day, and it came against the first hitter of the day for UC Santa Barbara (11-27, 3-10 Big West) as Madelyn McNally singled to shortstop to begin the day. Fowler ended the inning with a strikeout to strand McNally at second, and the Beach were on their way.
Long Beach State (20-17, 10-3 Big West) broke the game open in the bottom of the second. Kyra Snyder opened the inning with a single, and after an error left two on, a Rebekah Durazo bloop single loaded the bases.
Freshman Jacquelyn Bickar then cleared them with her second triple of the season to make the score 3-0. The second baseman came home to score on an overthrow on a stolen base from Lilyanna Martinez, and then Martinez score on an RBI single from Ashleigh Inae as the Beach put up five in the second.
Bickar and Inae delivered again one inning later. Bickar got the rally started with a single, and after Savannah Magadan was hit by a pitch, Martinez made the score 6-0 with an RBI single to right field. An RBI groundout from Maddy Ruffin brought home one more, and Inae doubled home the crucial eighth run to close out the scoring on Friday.
Fowler only allowed one additional baserunner after the first batter, striking out four on the way to her eighth win of the campaign, while Mo Quinlan finished off the fifth inning for LBSU without allowing a hit.
Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara are scheduled for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday to finish off the series. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
