Women’s Golf Heads To Big West Championship

Cal Poly serves as the institutional host this year as the teams travel to San Luis Obispo.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's regular season comes to its pinnacle as the Beach heads to San Luis Obispo, Calif. this weekend to take part in the Big West Championship. The tournament begins on Sunday, April 10 with a single round. The second round will then take place on Monday with the final round held on Tuesday, April 12.
Co-hosted by the Big West and Cal Poly, the nine Big West programs that sponsor women's golf will all head to the Par 72 San Luis Obispo Country Club for the championship.
For the opening round, Long Beach State has been paired with their nearest rivals in UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton as the Beach will tee off at 8:20 a.m. starting on Sunday.
Long Beach State is coming off of a high from their last tournament, taking second place in the 22-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic last weekend. Sophomore Vanessa Richani had a particularly strong tournament for the Beach, and will lead the lineup for LBSU at the Big West Championship after finishing in a tie for 13th overall in Maricopa, Ariz.
LBSU's most consistent golfer through the spring, Hannah Ko, will take the second spot in the lineup while coming in with the team's lowest stoke average on the year. Sophomore Angelina Kim will play third, having placed second for the team in each of the last three tournaments played. Hunter Pate and Chloe Carraway will round out the competitive squad, while Kristina Ponomareva will be on hand as an alternate for the Beach.
Both the team winner as well as the individual champion will receive an automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA Regionals. Nine schools sponsor women's golf in the Big West with the addition of CSU Bakersfield. UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara are the two schools that do not.
A streak that will be on the line on the championship is that Long Beach State has had the last three individual champions of the Big West. Holland Shourds was the 2021 winner, the 2020 championship was not held, the 2019 champion was Haley Tygret and Jennifer Yu was the 2018 individual medalist.
