A four-run first inning helped the Beach take a 5-2 win on the road.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State piled up four runs in a two-out rally to give Samantha Fowler plenty of support on the way to a 5-2 win over UC San Diego in the first game of a three-game series on the road against the Tritons.
Corissa Sweet got a two-out rally started for Long Beach State (18-16, 8-2 Big West) in the first inning as Jada Cecil plunked the freshman. Kyra Snyder then hit a double to bring in the opening run of the game, and Sara Olson traded places with the senior to make the score 2-0. Jacqueline Bickar followed with a single to score Olson, and then Marissa Caballero followed with a fourth RBI to end the top of the first with LBSU on top 4-0.
UC San Diego (18-17, 6-4) would have a baserunner in every inning, but Fowler worked around trouble nicely on the way to the win. The Tritons picked up their first run of the day with a double from Claudia Reynoso after a two-out walk in the fifth inning.
The Beach bounced back as Olson reached as the leadoff batter, and then came home to score on a pinch hit sacrifice fly from Rebekah Durazo to make the score 5-1.
The Tritons brought home one last run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Long Beach State closed out the win behind a complete game from Fowler.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at Noon on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
