Softball Splits Two Games With Hawai’i

4/30/2022 6:28:00 PM | Softball

Sophia Fernandez had a career-high seven strikeouts in a complete game win in game one.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State won the series with Hawai'i with a game one win on Saturday as Sophia Fernandez struck out a career-high seven in a complete game, but the Rainbow Wahine bounced back with a comeback win in game two to earn a split on the day.

Long Beach State (25-20, 15-6 Big West) got off to a strong start behind a new career-best in strikeouts from Sophia Fernandez, who struck out seven in her fifth complete game of the season, allowing just a pair of hits.

The Beach got off to a quick start with a run in the first inning. Ashleigh Inae drew a two-out walk, and after a single from Kyra Snyder, Rebekah Durazo brought home a run with a  single to put LBSU on top 1-0.

Long Beach State capitalized on a Hawai'i (19-17, 13-8 Big West) error to add another run in the third. A solo home run from Nawai Kaupe provided the lone run for the Rainbow Wahine in the top of the fourth, but the Beach answered back with another run in the bottom half to keep the lead at two.

The Beach then broke the game open in the sixth inning. An RBI single from Lilyanna Martinez scored the first run of the inning, leaving two on in front of Sara Olson who tripled down the right field line to make the score 6-1. An RBI groundout from Naomi Hernandez scored Sara Olson to make the score 7-1. Fernandez for her part set down the final nine batters she faced to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Long Beach State took a big early lead in the second game, but the Rainbow Wahine rallied with a big inning to upset the Beach dreams of a sweep.

Durazo had the second of her three hits on the day, a single to lead off the fourth inning, and pinch runner Rylie Seip would come home to score on a sacrifice fly from Justine Briones as Long Beach State once again struck first.

Olson started the bottom of the fifth with a single, and after an error extended the inning and scored another run, a double and a walk loaded the bases in front of Durazo. The freshman then doubled to left field, clearing the bases and giving the Beach a 5-0 lead.

Kaupe her her second solo home run of the day to upset the rhythm of starter Samantha Fowler, and an error further upset the command she had shown to that point, with just two hits allowed. The next two batters walked to load the bases, and after a single and a walk brought home two more runs leaving the bases loaded, Dallas Millwood hit a bases clearing double to give Hawai'i a 6-5 lead.

Ashleigh Inae singled to give the Beach hope, but Brianna Lopez came on and ultimately stranded the LBSU runner at third to pick up the save as the Rainbow Wahine salvaged the finale.

Long Beach State will close out their current homestand with their final three home games of the season. The Beach hosts CSU Bakersfield for three games, with the opening coming on Friday at 1 p.m. before a doubleheader at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. All three games are scheduled to be broadcast live on ESPN+.
