Softball Finishes Sweep Of CSUN With Marissa Caballero Walkoff

4/3/2022 4:56:00 PM | Softball

Samantha Fowler and Kenedee Jamerson had another fantastic matchup in the circle.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Samantha Fowler once again got the better of Kenedee Jamerson in a second pitcher's duel in as many days with a nine-inning complete game, helped by a key hit from freshman Marissa Caballero to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Corissa Sweet started the inning by reaching on an error from Matadors shortstop Aaliyah Swan. Moved over to second on a groundout, a wild pitch put Sweet on third, and a single through the left side from Caballero brought home the winning run for Long Beach State (17-16, 7-2 Big West).
CSUN (13-23, 3-6 Big West) raced off to a quick start, as Alexis Lemus opened the game with a base hit. The Matadors then loaded the bases with one out, and a hit batter kept the bases loaded and the rally going for CSUN. A baserunning gaffe was cleanly taken advantage of by the Beach for a double play to get out of the inning, a key moment of support for Samantha Fowler.

Fowler pitched all nine innings, striking out three and allowing just that one run on the day, improving to 6-4 on the year with her second win of the weekend.

Long Beach State evened the score in support of the junior in the second inning. Rebekah Durazo singled to start the inning, and Sweet and Lilyanna Martinez followed with singles to load the bases. Jamerson picked up a key strikeout, but a sacrifice fly from Jacqueline Bickar, who had sent a potential grand slam foul just moments earlier tied the game at 1-1.

Jamerson would hold the Beach off the board for the next six frames, finishing with 8.1 innings pitched and allowing just five hits including the one earned run despite the loss.

After the sweep, Long Beach State is in a three-way tie at the top of the Big West standings with Hawai'i and Cal State Fullerton. The Beach will also have a tough matchup in their next series, hitting the road for three games at fourth-place UC San Diego, who start the week one game behind the leaders. The series is set to start in La Jolla on Friday, April 8.
