The Dirtbags avoided the sweep against UC San Diego with a two-hit shutout on Sunday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Zach Voelker and Matt Fields combined for a two-hit shutout as Long Beach State (14-12, 4-5 Big West) took the series finale against UC San Diego (11-16, 3-3 Big West) on Sunday. The win marks the Dirtbags' fourth shutout of the season.
Looking to avoid the sweep, Voelker got the start on the mound and was tremendous yet again. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out six. The redshirt freshman earns his fourth win of the season and has yet to allow a run in games he starts.
He handed the ball off to Fields for the final two frames. The fifth year senior recorded a pair of strikeouts while facing the minimum six batters as he lowered his season ERA to 0.56.
The Dirtbags offense got on the board early, plating a run in the bottom of the first on a squeeze play from Jonathon Long. They tacked on another in the third thanks to a Triton error for an early 2-0 lead.
The biggest swing of the day came off the bat of Chris Jimenez in the fourth launching a two-run home run into the trees in left field. It marks his team-leading fifth bomb of the season extending the Dirtbag lead to four runs.
That was all the run support the pitching needed as Voelker and Fields cruised through the UC San Diego lineup on their way to a 4-0 victory.
The Dirtbags hit the road next as they head down to San Diego, Calif. for a midweek game at San Diego State on Tuesday. First pitch from Tony Gwynn Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
