Long Beach State Takes Game One Behind Gem From Samantha Fowler

Fowler struck out ten as Long Beach State dropped Hawai’i 1-0.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior Samantha Fowler matched a season high with ten strikeouts in her third complete game shutout of the season, going the distance in a 1-0 win Friday afternoon against Hawai'i.
Fowler scattered two hits over seven innings, outdueling Brianna Lopez of Hawai'i (18-16, 12-7 Big West) who took the loss despite striking out seven over six innings.
Both pitchers were in command early, before Long Beach State (24-19, 14-5 Big West) was able to break through the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kyra Snyder worked a leadoff walk, and Rebekah Durazo also reached as Maya Nakamura's charging attempt at a ground ball from the freshman was not fielded cleanly. Jacquelyn Bickar dropped a perfect bunt to move both runners over, a move that paid off in the next at-bat.
With pinch runner Rylie Seip on third, a hard ground ball to the left side was handled by third baseman Ka'ena Keliinoi. While she looked back Seip initially, she was forced to rush to try and get the speedy Lilyanna Martinez at first base, and while they made the second out at first, Seip was able to come home and score what would ultimately be the only run of the game.
Hawai'i best chance came in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally putting two runners on, but a ground ball to second base ended the threat, and Fowler struck out two more in the top of the seventh to put the icing on a gem.
