Softball Drops A Pair To Open Road Series at Cal Poly

4/23/2022 6:38:00 PM | Softball

Kyra Snyder had four hits over the course of the two games.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly had a bookend of momentum on Saturday on the way to a pair of wins, opening up the day with a 10-run first inning in game one, and then rallied from behind to beat the Beach in game two of the three-game series in San Luis Obispo.

The weekend got off to a tough start for Long Beach State (22-19, 12-5 Big Westf) as Cal Poly (16-22, 11-6 Big West) jumped on top of the Beach in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Jessica Clements and Noellah Ramos dropped back-to-back singles to get things going for the Mustangs, and Samantha Fowler lost the strike zone, walking four straight batters as Cal Poly took e a 3-0 lead.

Shelby Frutoz took over in the circle, but the Mustangs weren't done. Two more walks, three hits and an error would bring home a total of 10 runs in the first inning to stake Cal Poly to a huge lead.

Long Beach State refused to give up in the contest, however, and chipped away at the lead. Rebekah Durazo and Jaqcuelyn Bickar hit back-to-back singles to start the second inning, and then Sara Olson brought home both runs with a single. The sophomore then came home to score on a wild pitch to make the score 10-3.

The Beach scored three more runs in the third. Singles from Hernandez, Sweet and Snyder loaded the bases, and Bickar brought home another run with her second single of the game. With the bases still loaded, a walk to Savannah Magadan scored one more run and then Bickar scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to four runs at 10-6.

Ashleigh Inae hit a leadoff double in the fourth and scored on an RBI single from Kyra Snyder to cut the lead to just three after four innings.
The Mustangs picked up a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning, and put a stop to the comeback on the way to the 12-7 victory. Mo Quinlan ultimately pitched the majority of the innings for the Beach, ultimately going five innings and just allowing the two insurance runs in the sixth. Paige Maier held on for the win for Cal Poly.

Long Beach State struck first in the second game. After a scoreless first inning, the Beach broke through in the second. Kyra Snyder opened the inning with a single, and after Bickar moved pinch runner Rylie Seip over to second inning, an RBI single from Sara Olson gave LBSU their first lead of the series 1-0.

The Beach tacked on two more runs in the third. After Justine Briones hit a leadoff double and Naomi Hernandez walked to put runners on the corners, an RBI groundout and a single from Snyder made the score 3-0.

A pair of two-out rallies would bring Cal Poly right back into the contest. Xiara Diaz worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the fourth, and then a pair of singles sandwiched around an error would plate a pair of runs. The Mustangs then tied the game at 3-3 after Lily Amos singled with two outs in the fifth, and Hailey Prahm doubled to even the score.

Another two-out rally saw the Mustangs take the lead in the sixth inning. After two quick outs, the top of the order came up for the Mustangs and came through. Clements singled and after an error, a walk loaded the bases in front of Juju Sargent who hit a bloop single to score a pair of runs and take the lead.

Kate Judy finished off the complete game to give the Mustangs their second win of the day.

The series concludes with a third and final game scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Live coverage will be provided by ESPN+.
