No. 12 LBSU Beats CSULA, Upsets No. 4 Loyola Marymount

The LBSU Beach Volleyball team fought hard to beat Cal State Los Angeles and No. 4 LMU on Friday afternoon.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In a two win day, No. 12 Long Beach State took down CSULA, 4-1 in their first dual of the afternoon, and capped off the day upsetting the No. 4 LMU squad, 3-2. The Beach has now won 13 of their last 16 duals.
After a first flight loss, the Beach rebounded to take every other flight in two sets. Claire Newlander/Nicci Reinking only gave up six points each set to Jadden Groya/Haley Roundtree. Savannah Lyons/Sophie Major also defeated their opponents swiftly, only giving up seven points in the first set against the Golden Eagles.
Looking to snap a four-match losing streak against the Lions, the Beach battled and defeated them 3-2. The three set battles led to two duos losing to their opponents in the third set, but the duo of Katie Kennedy/Sydney Stevens didn't let that scare them. They finished 15-6, defeating Marine Kinna/Avery Poppinga in the third set. Emily Mattoon/Jillian Rodriguez were able to secure their win in two sets, winning both sets 21-14 to get closer to defeating the Lions. The fierce duo of Claire Newlander/Nicci Reinking continued to show their teamwork by defeating their opponents in two sets, even winning the first set by a whopping ten points.
The Beach will play their next matches against CSUN and CSU Bakersfield tomorrow, April 23rd, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the LBSU Sand Courts.
