The Beach will try for the sweep on Sunday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State won a pair of one-run games to pick up a third straight Big West conference series win at home on Saturday.
Samantha Fowler got the better of Kenedee Jamerson in a classic pitcher's duel in the opening game between the teams. Fowler got the start for Long Beach State (16-16, 6-2 Big West) and pitched a complete game shutout, scattering three hits over her seven innings and striking out five in the win.
Jamerson was nearly as good for CSUN (13-22, 3-5 Big West). The senior struck out eight batters and gave up just four hits, but Long Beach State was able to pick up the key run for the win in the third inning.
Sara Olson kicked off the inning with a single, and moved to second on an overthrow to put a runner in scoring position. After a bunt single from Naomi Hernandez, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, a key moment in the game as a groundball single from Ashleigh Inae brought home Olson in the only run of the contest.
In the second game, the Beach carried their momentum from the opening victory and took a big lead. Freshman Rebekah Durazo opened the second inning with a single, and after a walk to Jacquelyn Bickar, a two-run single from Olson gave the Beach a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Sinclair Lawhorn hit her first collegiate home run to extend the lead in the third, and back-to-back doubles from Kyra Snyder and Durazo plated one more. Finally, with the bases loaded, a station-to-station single from Olson and a bases-loaded walk made the score 6-0.
The Matadors made things interesting, cutting into the lead with a four-run fourth inning, but Sophia Fernandez was able to work a three-inning save in relief of Shelby Frutoz, allowing just one run to close out a 6-5 win. Frutoz, who made the start, worked four innings and picked up her team-high sixth win of the season.
Long Beach State will go for the sweep against CSUN Sunday at the LBSU Softball Complex with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Live coverage will be provided by ESPN+.
