ABOUT LAST WEEK
• The Dirtbags struggled last week, going 1-3 in their four games. They have now lost seven of their last 10 games as they look to turn things around in their conference bye week coming up.
• The week started with a trip down I-5 where Long Beach State fell 5-1 against San Diego State. Rocco Peppi recorded a multi-hit game and scored the only run while Johnny Wholestaff appeared on the mound with eight different pitchers throwing for LBSU.
• In game one at #17 Cal Poly, the Mustangs scored four runs in the first inning and the Dirtbags could never recover. Marques Johnson was phenomenal out of the bullpen with 6.1 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. LBSU stranded five runners in the final two innings, dropping the opener 4-1.
• Game two saw the return of Luis Ramirez and one of the most offensive games in program history. The Dirtbags scored 28 runs for the second time in the Valenzuela era while the pitching surrenedered just two unearned runs.
• The series finale was all Mustangs early as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Long Beach State tried to rally back with four runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth, but came up short in the 10-7 loss.
HISTORIC DAY IN SLO
• Saturday's game two at Cal Poly turned out to be a record-setting day for the Dirtbags, winning the ballgame by 28-2. No, it was not a football game despite it being a four touchdown score.
• Long Beach State rattled off 32 hits in the victory, setting a new program record for most hits in a single-game that had been untouched since April 17, 1998 when the Dirtbags recorded 30 hits in a 30-6 win over Nevada.
• The 26-run winning margin on Saturday also set a new program record that was set in that same game against Nevada.
• Leadoff hitter Charlie Loust went 3-for-8 on the day with a pair of home runs. His eight at-bats tied the program record for most at-bats in a single-game, last done by Danny Espinosa in 2007.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA BAPTIST
• The Lancers enter the week with a 21-9 overall record and 8-4 mark in conference. They are coming off a series loss to Air Force, but have won five of their last seven games.
• As a team, they own a .324 average and .941 OPS averaging almost nine runs per game. They have two guys hitting over .400 led by David Martin's .449 clip. In total, they have five hitters with an OPS above 1.000 and almost their entire starting lineup has three or more home runs.
• The Lancer pitching staff owns a 4.77 ERA and a .277 opponent batting average. Seth Mattox and Liam Rocha have been the big arms out of the bullpen owning 1.50 and 2.70 ERAs respectively. Projected starter, Spencer Bengard owns a 6.14 ERA in 14.2 innings this season.
AGAINST THE LANCERS
• Tuesday's game marks the first time the two programs have met as Division I schools. The only time they have faced each other before was in 1983 when CBU was still Division II.
• Long Beach State (they weren't the Dirtbags yet) defeated the Lancers in that game by the score of 25-7 back in 1983.
