With the loss, Long Beach State has suffered their third straight conference series loss.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach State (15-15, 5-7 Big West) fell behind early in the series finale against Cal Poly (20-12, 7-2 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. The Dirtbags attempted a late rally, but came up short dropping the Sunday matinee, 10-7.
The Mustangs started the game with three runs in the first and three runs in the second to open it up early. Dirtbag starter, Zach Voelker, lasted just 2.2 innings surrendering the six runs on seven hits and two walks in his first loss of the season. It also marks the first time that the right-hander has allowed a run in a start.
Long Beach State's offense was stifled by Mustang starter, Dylan Villalobos, who faced the minimum through four innings before the Dirtbags ended the shutout in the fifth. Peyton Schulze led the inning off with a double to left-center followed by a Chase Luttrell RBI single forcing a Mustang pitching change.
After Cal Poly scored twice in each of the fifth and seventh, the Dirtbags sparked up a rally in the eighth and ninth innings. With the bases loaded in the eighth, Charlie Loust stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter sending a double down the left field line to drive in two runs. Two wild pitches would make it a four-run inning for the 'Bags.
Trailing by five in the final frame, a Sebastian Murillo single before a loud Jonathon Long home run made it a three-run game. It is Long's fifth home run of the season matching his season total from last year. Unfortunately, the next two LBSU hitters would be retired giving the Dirtbags a 10-7 loss.
That is now three consecutive Big West series losses as LBSU heads into their weekend bye from conference play.
The Dirtbags return home to Blair for a Tuesday night matchup with California Baptist before flying up to Oregon for a weekend series with Oregon State. First pitch against the Lancers will be at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
