No. 14 Long Beach Falls to No. 2 UCLA, No. 11 Cal Poly on Day One of Battle for L.A.

The Beach fell to 1-5 on the season.
Long Beach, CALIF. - No. 14 Long Beach State began their weekend at the Battle for L.A., hosted by USC and UCLA, on Saturday. The Beach opened the tournament suffering a loss against No. 2 UCLA, 0-5 and unfortunately fell short against No. 11 Cal Poly, 2-3.
Fresh off the heels of their tri-dual this past Tuesday against No. 16 Stetson and No. 4 LMU, the Beach fought hard but ultimately lost against No. 2 UCLA. Each match ended in two sets with the exception of Nicci Reinking and Katie Kennedy, who forced a third set against Rileigh Powers and Lea Monkhouse, losing the first set 12-21 but coming back to win the next set 21-13. The duo came up just short in the third set 14-16.
In the second dual of the invitational, Long Beach State suffered a loss against No. 11 Cal Poly, but not without a fight. Sydney Stevens & Holland Jackson secured Long Beach's first point of the dual, beating Delaney Peranich & Eleonore Johansen 22-20 in the first set and 21-16 in the next. Jillian Rodriguez & Emilly Mattoon also secured a victory for the Beach, losing to Addison Hermstad & Josie Ulrich in the first set 15-21 but coming back to win 2 sets back to back.
The Beach are scheduled to play two more games on Sunday, starting the day with a dual against No. 8 Stanford at 10am .and finishing the tournament with a rematch against No. 1 USC at 2pm.
