The Beach endured another tough day against two top ten opponents.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. No. 14 Long Beach State finished off the Battle for L.A. Invitational on Sunday with two top ten opponents. The Beach opened the day against No. 8 Stanford, coming up short 2-3, and ended the tournament with a loss in a rematch against No. 1 USC, 0-5.
Â
Looking hungry after two hard-fought losses on Saturday against No. 2 UCLA and No. 11 Cal Poly, the Beach gave No. 8 Stanford a run for their money. The duos of Skyler Germann & Alice Pratesi and Katie Kennedy & Nicci Reinking both took decisive third set victories, earning the Beach two points. Stanford and the Beach battled back and forth, with all but one match lasting 3 sets. However, Stanford ultimately came out on top, taking the last set of the third flight 18-16 to secure the dual.
Â
For the last dual of the invitational, Long Beach State was set to rematch No.1 USC, who they lost to in the first game of the 2022 season. Unfortunately, the Beach were defeated by USC once again. Each of the duos' matches ended in two sets, except for Emily Mattoon & Jillian Rodriguez, who managed to push Nicole Nourse & Shannon Scully to a third set. The duo lost the first set 12-21, came back to win the next set 21-13, and came up short in the last set 15-10.
Â
Long Beach State is scheduled to return to play on Thursday, March 17 against Pepperdine at 12 pm and Southern Miss 2 pm in Malibu.
