Softball Falls In 13-Inning Marathon

The game matched the longest home game for Long Beach State since 2004.
Long Beach State (14-16, 4-2 Big West) struck first on the day, scoring in the first inning. Naomi Hernandez led off the game with a single, and after moving to second on an error from UC Davis (13-15, 2-4 Big West), the senior scored on a single from Kyra Snyder to put the Beach in front.
Justine Briones doubled in the second inning and was brought home by a second double from Hernandez, doubling the lead for Long Beach State, and the Beach added one more in the fifth inning after another error from the Aggies, who would end up with five miscues on the day.

Errors would also hurt the Beach on the day, however. In the sixth, UC Davis got on the board against Samantha Fowler with a pair of unearned runs after Alyssa Ito singled in the extended inning.
Fowler looked to get out of the game with just those runs, however, picking up two quick outs in the top of the seventh, but Anna Dethlefson extended the game with a solo home run to tie things at 3-3.
Long Beach State loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, and had Jaqueline Bickar on third in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't push the winning run across against Kenedi Brown, who had a tremendous day.
Brown finished with nine strikeouts over a 13-inning complete game, as the sophomore held the Beach scoreless for eight straight innings. The Aggies finally broke through in the 13th, taking advantage of three LBSU errors to make the score 6-3, and Brown set down the Beach in order in the bottom half to close out the win.
Taking just over four hours, the 13-inning game matched the longest game for the Beach since 2011, when LBSU also went 13 innings against UC Santa Barbara. The last game longer than 13 innings for LBSU came in 2004.
Long Beach State is back at home next weekend, hosting CSUN for a three-game series at the LBSU Softball Complex.
