Long Beach, Calif. — In a renewal of the Black and Blue Rivalry, No. 10 Long Beach State couldn't overcome a fast start by No. 6 UC Irvine as the Beach lost 11-7 to the Anteaters Friday night at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
UCI (15-5, 3-0) got on the board first as Piper Smith converted on an early penalty shot.
Orsi Hertzka tied the game less than a minute later a 6-on-5 powerplay.
A goal by Anne De Kleer cut the Anteaters lead to 3-2, but UCI responded with a 2-0 run to take a 5-2 lead after the first period.
In the second period, Jamie Oberman and Rachael Kowalchick scored to cut UCI's lead to 5-4, but the Anteaters responded 4-2 run to take a 9-6 lead late in the third period.
Kowalchick and Oberman led the Beach with two goal each and Chelsea Oliver had eight saves.
The Beach (11-12) will be back in action April 8 when they host UC Davis for a Big West Contest.
