Offense Explodes for 19 Runs in Rout of Fresno State
3/22/2022 10:20:00 PM | Baseball
The Dirtbags set season-highs with 19 runs and 20 hits in the victory.
The 'Bags wasted no time, sending 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first scoring eight runs in their first at-bats. After two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, Jonathon Long got the scoring started with a ground-rule double to left-center scoring two. From there, Long Beach State got an RBI single from Charlie Loust, a squeeze play from Sebastian Murillo, and an RBI single from Chris Jimenez to make it 5-0.
The top half of the first was capped off by a Chase Luttrell three-run home run to right field. The junior recorded two hits, two runs, and three RBI in the first inning alone.

The second inning encore looked similar as 11 more Dirtbags came to the plate with six runs coming across all with two outs. After a strikeout and a lineout started the inning, LBSU notched seven straight hits to push their lead to 14 runs. The hit parade consisted of three singles and four RBI doubles.
Heading into the third inning, every Dirtbag in the starting lineup had scored a run. Eight of the nine had recorded at least one hit and seven of them recorded an RBI.
Long Beach State was not done after two innings though, scoring four more runs in the fifth and one more in the top of the ninth.
The pitching staff used five arms on the night with Zach Voelker (3-0) getting the start. He threw two scoreless innings as he has yet to allow a run in games that he starts. The other note from the Dirtbag pitchers would be the collegiate debut of Zach Locke. The redshirt freshman tossed a scoreless eighth inning while picking up the first strikeout of his career.
Luttrell was pulled after his at-bat in the fifth, but still finished 4-for-5 with six RBI and three runs scored. The Dirtbag right fielder was potentially robbed of a cycle in his final at-bat as the ball kicked up and over the wall for a ground-rule double, giving him a single, two doubles, and a home run on the night.
In his first start of the season, Loust made a huge impact at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored. Murillo also notched a three-hit game going 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.
The Dirtbags are back to conference play this weekend as they head to CSUN for a three-game set with the Matadors. Game times are 3:00 p.m. Friday, 2:00 p.m. Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
