Voelker Dominates No. 23 UConn, Dirtbags Win 7-1

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Behind a tremendous outing from Zach Voelker, the Dirtbags (8-7) picked up a 7-1 victory over No. 23 UConn (12-3) on Wednesday night. Long Beach State has now won three straight, six of their last seven, and own five wins over ranked opponents this season.
Voelker was the story of the night, making just his second start in a Dirtbags uniform. Facing a Husky team hitting over .300, he tossed six innings without allowing a hit on his way to the victory. The only damage against him was a fifth inning walk while also striking out seven. The right-hander moves to 2-0 on the season with a 1.80 ERA.
Offensively, it was all about the Dirtbags' plate discipline. UConn entered the week ranked first in fewest walks allowed per nine innings and LBSU drew 13 on the night. It marks a new program record for a single-game, surpassing the previous best of 12 set back in 2002.
The scoring started in the first inning after Chase Luttrell led off with a double followed by an Eddie Saldivar single. After a stolen base put both runners in scoring position, Jonathon Long sent a single back up the middle to give the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.
Long Beach State would tack on another in the third before putting up a three spot in the fifth. A Rocco Peppi single into left field was the big hit of the inning scoring a pair to push the lead to six.
The Dirtbags would get another run in the sixth on a Tanner Carlson RBI single to make it 7-0 which was more than enough run support for Voelker.
The seventh saw a pitching change as Marques Johnson took over on the mound. The leadoff hitter for UConn would end the no-hit bid with a single into left, but he would be the only baserunner allowed by Johnson in 1.2 scoreless innings.
UConn plated their only run in the top of the ninth off Kaden Moeller, but Dalton Ponce came into the ballgame and struck out the final Husky of the game to secure the 7-1 victory for the Dirtbags.
After his hit streak ended on Sunday, Luttrell got back on track with two hits out of the leadoff spot. Tyler Porter also notched another two-hit game as he now owns multi-hit efforts in his last four.
Carlson reached safely in all four plate appearances with that RBI single to go along with three walks on the night.
The Dirtbags are now over .500 for the first time since opening weekend as they head into conference play this weekend. The Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors will make the trip to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field for their weekend set beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
