Naomi Hernandez had a solo home run to give the staff all of the support they would need in a 2-0 win over California Baptist.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sophia Fernandez, Shelby Frutoz and Samantha Fowler combined for eight strikeouts and no hits for the 32nd no-hitter in Long Beach State softball history, a 2-0 win over California Baptist.
Sophia Fernandez got the start for Long Beach State (10-14), completing the largest portion of the work with three innings on the day against California Baptist (17-13). Fernandez struck out three and retired the first six batters she saw, facing the minimum over her three innings.
Shelby Frutoz took over the fourth inning, retiring the Lancers in order, and then working around a leadoff walk, courtesy of a key play as Justine Briones caught a bunt pop to end the threat.
Those innings were sandwiched around the big hit of the day for Long Beach State, as senior Naomi Hernandez gave the Beach a lift with a solo home run for a 1-0 lead.
Samantha Fowler entered in the sixth inning, and despite hitting the first batter she faced, the junior settled in and worked out of the inning, stranding Samantha Demyon at third base with a strikeout of pinch hitter Priscilla Estrada.
Corissa Sweet started the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double and came home to score on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead, and Fowler struck out the final two batters of the game to finish off the no-hitter, the 32nd in school history. It was the second combined no-hitter in school history and the first to feature three pitchers.
Long Beach State will start Big West Conference on the road this weekend, traveling to UC Riverside for a three-game set. The series begins on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., followed by a final game Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
