Long Beach State Drops A Pair On Final Day Of Louisville Slugger Invitational

3/13/2022 5:53:00 PM | Softball

The Beach falls against UCF, Nebraska to finish off 10 games total hosted at the LBSU Softball Complex over the weekend.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Facing two top opponents to close out the Louisville Slugger invitational, Long Beach State was found wanting for answers in a pair of losses to finish off the weekend at the LBSU Softball Complex against UCF and Nebraska.

Long Beach State (9-14) had a tough day at the plate in both sides of the doubleheader. In the opening game, UCF (22-7) held the Beach to just three hits, two of which came from Naomi Hernandez.

Sophia Fernandez who got the start against the Knights worked a scoreless first inning, but gave up two runs in the second and a third following a leadoff walk in the third inning. Fernandez exited the game after four innings, and the Knights took advantage of the relief in the circle, piling up two more runs in the fifth inning and then scoring seven in the sixth, helped by an error to extend the inning. That ended the contest early in a 12-0 six-inning run-rule win in favor of UCF.

Shelby Frutoz got the nod in the circle for the second game, facing off against Olivia Ferrell of Nebraska (15-7). The sophomore retired the first seven batters she faced, but then gave up three straight singles as the Huskers got on the board in the top of the third.

That 1-0 score would hold until the fifth inning, when Cam Ybarra sparked a Nebraska rally that brought home three more runs. Nebraska would then plate an additional run in the sixth to make it 5-0, and then scored four more in the seventh against reliever Samantha Fowler.

Ferrell struck out ten Long Beach State batters, a season high against LBSU as Nebraska pulled away to win 9-0. Sinclair Lawhorn was 2-for-2 in game two to highlight the offensive effort for the Beach.

Long Beach State will play one additional home game as part of the current homestand, welcoming California Baptist to the LBSU Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15 and the game is planned to be the Beach Softball debut on ESPN+.
