Porter’s Walkoff Gives Long Beach State Series Victory over No. 15 Gonzaga

With the win, the Dirtbags picked up their second series victory over a ranked opponent.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Tyler Porter was the hero on Sunday afternoon as the Dirtbags (7-7) walked it off with a 1-0 victory over No. 15 ranked Gonzaga (11-4) in the series finale. The win gives Long Beach State their second series victory over a ranked opponent this season.
After eight and a half scoreless innings by both sides, a one-out rally in the bottom of the ninth began with a Rocco Peppi single into right field. Peyton Schulze followed it up with a single of his own into left, moving the winning run into scoring position. Down 0-2 in the count, Porter lined a ball into right to give the Dirtbags the win as Peppi slid in safely just ahead of the tag.
The pitching from both teams was phenomenal in the series finale as the offenses combined for just one run on eight hits and two walks for the ballgame.
Long Beach State's starter, Juaron Watts-Brown, turned in the best start of his career with seven shutout innings. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the sixth and allowed just two baserunners total while striking out seven Zags.
He handed the ball off to Matt Fields who worked out of a first-and-third jam for a scoreless eighth before being relieved by Devereaux Harrison. The preseason All-American made quick work of Gonzaga posting a perfect ninth, needing just eight pitches.
A tip of the cap to Gonzaga starter, Trystan Vrieling, who tossed eight scoreless innings and allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out nine Dirtbags.
Prior to the game starting, Long Beach State and Gonzaga took a moment to honor and recognize Gonzaga's Associate Head Coach Danny Evans and his battle against cancer. While Coach Evans was unable to make the trip with the team, both sides showed that this is more than just a game.
After just two hours and five minutes, Long Beach State earned their second shutout victory of the season while the walkoff is the first since May 16, 2021 when the 'Bags won it in 10 innings against CSU Bakersfield.
Winners in five of their last six, the Dirtbags will look to keep it going in a midweek matchup with UCONN on Wednesday. First pitch from Bohl Diamond at Blair Field will be at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN+
